It was the wonderful and talented and perfect and life-goal-for-me writer Kelly Sue Deconnick who said:
“Sometimes, Spite Is The Only Reason I Get Out Of Bed In The Morning.”
She spoke in regards to the stigma of women in comics, women in writing, and just about women in general, but she’s spot on for almost every aspect of life.
You know what?
No one wants you to win. No one wants you to succeed. No one thinks you have what it takes. That’s just the way life is–people are worried about their own shit and could give a fuck less about yours. Sometimes they ignore you. Sometimes they are hateful.
Spite ‘em. Get out of bed. You know who you are and what the fuck you have to offer the world. You’re a goddamn monster of kickass and you can tell them to shove it up their stupid asses when you reach the top of the hill and they don’t like it.
You have something that no one else in the whole world has: You have you. You are what you need to get your shit done. You are what you need to succeed, to win, to be a motherfucking champion. They don’t have you, your life, your experiences. They don’t have your attitude or your history. They don’t have your heart.
You want to write and everyone tell you you’re not good? Write more. Work harder. Fuck ‘em. You write until you’re happy with what you produce and then you write more.
You want to draw and everyone tells you it’s not gonna lead to a career? Fuck ‘em, make it one. Work so goddamn hard that they can’t ignore you and when you’re making a living you can tell ‘em to shove it up their asses.
You want to do what you want to do and everything in the whole world is dragging you down? Shake that shit off. Fuck ‘em. Spite ‘em and get out of bed and get to work. Prove yourself to yourself. They don’t get to dictate who you are or what your limits are because you can’t even do that.
You don’t have limits.
You don’t have a finite amount of talent or skill or willpower.
You have you. You are what you need.
